India
WCT first venture overseas was in 1999 when it secured a build, operate and transfer (BOT) project for a highway linking Tada to Nellore on NH5 in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. This involved the widening of the existing 2-lane road into a 4-lane 110.8km highway and for a 36km stretch from Nandigama to Ibrahimpatnam on NH9.
The Group added two more BOT highway projects in 2002 ?the Panagapur-Palsit and Durgapur Expressways. The two projects are structured on a deferred payment basis with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) paying the concessionaire 30 semi-annual payments for a period of 30 months.
Bahrain, Qatar & UAE
In 2002, WCT was successful in tendering for the construction of a Bahrain International Circuit. The Groups' solid reputation gained from the building of the Sepang F1 Circuit, which has received international accolades, gave WCT the winning edge. The Bahrain International Circuit was handed over 2 days before the contractual period despite the high technical demands, unfavourable weather conditions and design variations in the midst of construction.
The solid reputation built in Bahrain has helped WCT to strengthen its position in the construction industry in the country by securing additional civil engineering mandates. The Al-Seef Flyover under the North Manama Corridor Improvement Project was awarded to WCT in 2003 and in the following year, the highway link to Durat Al-Bahrain was added to WCT orderbook. In 2006, WCT succesfully tendered and secured the Main Contract for the construction of the Bahrain City Centre valued at RM1.28 Billion. This is a significant milestone as it is the 1st overseas major building contract and largest building contract to date for WCT .
In Qatar, WCT, together with its consortium and joint venture partners had in July 2005 secured 2 significant projects, namely the 43-km Dukhan Highway and the Provision of Airfield Paving, Tunnel & Detention Ponds Works For The New Doha International Airport. Both projects are expected to strengthen WCT's presence in the Middle East region as well as enhancing WCT's track record in overseas projects.
Year 2007 marked a solid year for WCT when the Company via 50-50 strategic partnerships made foray into the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi construction market.
The Abu Dhabi F1 Circuit contract valued at more than RM4.2 Billion reaffirmed WCT's reputation as a Formula One Circuit specialist, having built the Sepang and Bahrain circuits.
The iconic Yas Marina Royal Yacht Club located in Abu Dhabi, UAE is the latest high profile projects secured by WCT in the Middle East, which set to host the royal families and guests of Abu Dhabi for the Abu Dhbai F1 Grand Prix.
