Every piece of plastic we use and dispose matters, and our collective choices have a direct impact on the health of our environment. With this in mind, 29 WCT colleagues participated in the River Educational Trip at Sungai Klang on 2 July 2026, a programme designed to deepen environmental awareness and encourage long-term behavioural change across the Group.  

 

Organised in collaboration with the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) under our WCTGives #AGreenerTomorrow pillar, the programme offered participants a closer look at the impact of plastic pollution on local communities, biodiversity, and economic activities.  

 

 

The programme featured a River Awareness Boat Ride and a Guided Riverbank Cleanup, giving participants first-hand insights into the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and protect the Klang River. During the boat ride, the team observed key-river cleaning measures, including log booms that trap floating debris, as well as Interceptors 002 and 005, which collect waste from the river.  

 

Together with the cleanup activity, the experience offered a clearer understanding of the sustained effort required to restore the river and reinforced the importance of reducing waste at the source. 

 

Did you know?  

 

The Klang River begins in Ampang Jaya and flows through Kuala Lumpur and several urban areas in Selangor before reaching Port Klang. As the river passes through densely populated areas, litter left on streets or discarded into drains can be washed into the river by rain and carried downstream. This means that some of the rubbish seen during the trip may have originated far from where it was eventually found. 

 

 

 

Eye-opening perspective: Seeing first-hand how litter accumulates in the Klang River and how log booms and Interceptors help trap and remove floating waste. 

 

 

 

Action on the ground: Taking collective responsibility to protect our local ecosystems by removing waste directly from the riverbank. 

 

Protecting Our Rivers Starts on Land 

 

Much of the rubbish polluting our rivers begins on the streets. Litter left behind at markets, thrown from vehicles or discarded into street drains can be washed into the drainage system during rainfall and eventually enter our rivers.  

 

Protecting our waterways therefore begins with keeping our surroundings clean and ensuring every piece of waste is disposed of responsibly. 

 

Through hands-on programmes like this, WCT continues to cultivate a culture of responsible citizenship and environmental action. Every small change in our daily habits contributes to a larger, positive environmental impact
